Tao's Restaurant

My friends and I headed down to Tao's Restaurant on a Saturday evening for dinner and I decided to re-evaluate the restaurant's standards!

Address: 1 Selegie Road, POMO, #B1-19 Tel : 63398858
Website: http://www.taos-restaurant.com/
Pricing: Lunch is $21.80 ++ with 6 courses and dinner's $31.80++ with 7 courses.

Entrance to Tao's Restaurant

 1st Course : Starter
Bacon and Mushroom Gratin (standard)
Rating : 7 / 10
Complimentary warm toast went well with the rich and cheesy gratin.

2nd Course : Salad
Fruit Salad
Rating : 6.5 / 10
A novelty dish stuffed with peaches, apples, cucumbers and fake crab meat, but otherwise so-so.

2nd Course : Salad
Prawn Roll with Pork Floss
Rating : 6 / 10
Nothing spectacular, according to friend K who had this.

3rd Course : Grilled King Oyster Mushroom & Sorbet
Rating : 4 / 10
The mushroom was very well marinated with teriyaki/bbq? sauce and it was excellent! However they forgot to serve our sorbet, hence the rating.

4th Course : Soup
Japanese Fish Consommé
Rating : 5 / 10
There was a fishy taste and the portion shrunk...

4th Course : Soup
Cream of Mushroom
Rating : 6 / 10
Soup was adequately creamy and mushroom-y, but nothing impressive.

4th Course : Soup
Cream of Pumpkin
Rating : 5 / 10
It tasted more like corn soup rather than pumpkin.

5th Course : Beverages
Iced grassjelly mint tea
Rating : 5.5 / 10
Mint leaves were spotted in the cute-sy container, but the grass jelly was slightly bitter.

 5th Course : Beverages
Iced summer peach tea
 Rating : 8.5 / 10 *Recommended for beverages!*
Favourite "course" of the night, this drink was sweet and peachy but not syrup-y and over-cloying. The naming of this summer peach tea is extremely apt for this refreshing drink.

5th Course : Beverages
Iced rose apple tea
 Rating : 8 / 10
Friend Y could whiff  the fragrance of rose when she poured herself a cup. Good combination of apple slices and rose petals, would say this is the second best drink in the menu!

 6th Course : Main Entrees
Pan Seared Duck Breast
Rating : 5.5 / 10
Waiter did not explain that pan searing the duck meat will cause the outside of the duck meat to look like it was cooked, and the inside was still cool and barely cooked. Not very enjoyable.

6th Course : Main Entrees
Baked Atlantic Flounder with cheese
Rating : 6 / 10
The fish was very tender. However, the cheese was abit too bland for friend S's liking.

 6th Course : Main Entrees
Slow-cooked Pork Back Ribs
Rating : 7.5 / 10 *Recommended for main entree*
This signature dish generally did not fall below expectations. The meat was thoroughly marinated and slow cooked till almost perfection. Only thing was that the portion shrunk (again).

 7th Course : Desserts
Brownie with ice cream
Rating : 6.5 / 10
Quite an ordinary dessert, but I was pleasantly surprised when the waiter agreed to change the flavour of the ice-cream from vanilla to green tea. Good service there!

7th Course: Desserts
Chef's Special (Orange-flavoured cheesecake?)
Rating : 6 / 10
A creative dessert, but it fell short in the flavouring of the cheese. Too mild for friend S's tastebuds.

 7th Course : Desserts
Crème Brule
Rating : 6 / 10
This french dessert of custard base and caramel sugar coating at the top was quite well made. Texture could have been smoother though.

Overall : 7 / 10 (Unbias-ed)
5.5 / 10 (As I have been there many times, standard dropping)

Conclusion: This restaurant is still value-for-money,  and it is a decent choice of venue for gatherings.

Note*: The 7 course meal can be quite heavy, do empty your stomach before heading there!
